Vermouth is the perfect aperitif drink.

What Is Vermouth?

  • Vermouth is a fortified wine that’s been flavored with aromatics. It’s a traditional Calatan drink that’s often enjoyed as an apéritif.
  • Drinking vermouth has recently become more popular, especially among younger people. You can enjoy it century-old bodegas or modern bars throughout Barcelona.
  • Save time finding the best places to enjoy vermouth in Barcelona with our list of favorite recommended vermouth bars!

Quimet i Quimet

As a show of respect, let’s begin with one of the most classic and old-school vermouth bars around—Quimet i Quimet. Boasting over 100 years of history, its high wooden beams and shelves of dusty bottles are as authentic as they come.

The conservas, a very popular snack of canned shellfish are hugely popular among the locals. They also have plenty of freshly prepared montaditos or little sandwiches, that are the perfect way to hold you over until your late Spanish lunch.

Story Café Bar

There’s something magical about this Story Café Bar, a charming little spot hidden in the heart of the Born. Not only do they make their own homemade vermouth, but they also make a number of varieties! The result is two delicious versions of our favorite aperitif to choose from while enjoying the funky atmosphere and surroundings that make this place so unique.

Make sure to visit on Wednesday nights to enjoy some truly fantastic local jazz artists who perform here each week. Vermouth and jazz are definitely two of our favorite things to enjoy—especially simultaneously.

Bodega La Tieta

Having recently joined the ranks of the gastronomic offer on Blai street in Poble Sec, Bodega la Tieta is already a favorite of the local food and drink scene. A minuscule bar with no tables inside makes it the perfect spot to mingle with locals at the bar.

If you fancy resting your feet after a long day of exploring Barcelona, your best bet is trying to grab a table on their lovely tree-lined terrace. The food is all fantastic, but our favorite thing to grab here is the chickpeas with prawns. Trust us—it’s delicious, especially when it’s washed down with a vermouth!

Bodegas Ca’l Pep

A few blocks up and out of the hustle and bustle of Calle Verdi you will find the most curious of vermouth bars. Bodegas Ca’l Pep is one of those places that transport you back in time when the local bodega was the epicenter of the local community.

Close to 80 years of age, this place has all the basic elements of an authentic bodega: wooden beams, dusty wine barrels, and vintage posters that have no aesthetic rhyme or reason. The same people are always sitting in the same place, so grab a drink and a snack and join the crowd.

Casa Mariol

One of our favorite Barcelona vermouth bars, Casa Mariol is located just minutes away from the Sagrada Familia. The small and comfortable bar is rather new and not the traditional style vermouth lair you may be used to seeing in the city.

While sipping, you can enjoy some of the best canned food in the city, along with excellent sandwiches called clothes. These are typical of the Terra Alta region of Catalonia, which is where the winery is based.

Insider Tip: As of our last visit, the menu is only available in Catalan, so brush up on your language skills and be adventurous!

Bar Electricitat

Bar Electricitat is an old fashioned vermouth bar that’s a legend in the Barceloneta neighborhood, and with good reason too. The ambiance is as casual as it gets here and as you’d expect the vermouth is also.

They leave the bottle on your table and when you’re done you tell them how many glasses you’ve poured. Be careful though, as you could end up drinking a lot more than you realize! The food here is simple but delicious—which will no doubt leave you happy and smiling.

Morro Fi

Morro Fi is the name of a blog owned by three foodie friends who eventually opened up this bar together. Their signature drink is their house vermouth and tapas that could have been made in mom’s kitchen.

Morro Fi has a more modern twist than your typical vermouth bar. However, the tapas here are as classic as ever. It’s definitely one place we love to visit for a pre-dinner vermouth!

La Vermutería del Tano

One the best vermouth bars in Barcelona is the traditional Vermutería del Tano. It’s the place to come on Saturday afternoons in Gràcia!

Enjoy a vermouth with some of their excellent tuna conserves, and definitely order a bag of artisanal potato chips with their special sauce.

Bar Seco

At the foot of Montjuic, you’ll find Bar Seco. Enjoy your vermouth on a terrace with a view of the enchanting green hill on the edge of Barcelona. Bar Seco boasts local and sustainable products, which would explain the sweet and simple menu.

Vermouth Bars in Barcelona FAQs

How do they drink vermouth in Barcelona?

In Barcelona, vermouth (vermut in Catalan) is typically enjoyed on the rocks (poured over ice), and garnished with an orange slice and an olive. It’s often sipped slowly as a social ritual before lunch, paired with small bites like anchovies, olives, or chips. Locals call this tradition “la hora del vermut”—the hour of vermouth—a relaxed moment to gather with friends and ease into the day.

What is vermouth in Barcelona?

Vermouth in Barcelona is a fortified, aromatized wine infused with herbs, spices, and botanicals, such as clove, cinnamon, or citrus peel. Catalonia has a long tradition of producing high-quality vermouth, and many bars serve their own house-made versions straight from the barrel (vermut de grifo). It’s sweeter and more complex than what you might find elsewhere, making it a quintessential part of Barcelona’s food and drink culture.

When to drink vermouth in Barcelona?

The best time to drink vermouth in Barcelona is late morning to early afternoon, typically between noon and 2 pm. This pre-lunch ritual is a beloved local custom, especially on weekends. You’ll see locals gathered at neighborhood bodegas or terrace bars, enjoying a glass of vermouth with light tapas before the main meal—it’s as much about the company and atmosphere as the drink itself.

My husband, two friends and I just returned from a trip to Barcelona. We had the privilege of being guided by Alvaro. This tour turned out to be the high point of our trip. We “loved it”. It was “our favorite”. He is a fantastic guide that mixed his enjoyment and knowledge of food, culture and the niches of Barcelona into an absolutely phenomenal experience. I rarely rate anything on the internet but we talked about this tour the whole time we were in Europe, so I had to comment. He set the standard that no one else was able to reach. Take a tour. Ask for Alvaro.
