Our guide met us outside the museum and began introducing us to the institution and one another in our small group as we passed the few minutes before the museum opened. She led us through a selection of 20 paintings, weaving them into a story of Spain’s history from the founding of Madrid to the conflict with Napoleonic France in the early 19th century. This combination of history and art deepened appreciation of both. From there we walked through the city to the restaurant. This tour permits entry just before Botín’s opening, providing a chance to see its wood-fired ovens where they prepare their signature suckling pig and the wine cellar that predates even the founding of this restaurant. Our guide led us through the three-course meal both answering and asking questions of the group in a conversational manner that made for a very pleasant day. For both lovers of art and food, this tour is more than highly recommended.
