Overview

Say goodbye to the crowds in central Rome and step into the everyday life of real Romans on this Testaccio food and market tour. From breakfast through lunch, you'll taste the city’s most emblematic dishes, from locals' favorite breakfast pastry to authentic Roman pasta and so much more, in this proud, non-touristy neighborhood that’s fiercely held onto its roots. Along the way, you'll meet some of our best friends in Rome—Testaccio's small business owners—and learn about the passion they have for their family-run market stalls, pastry shops, and *trattorias*. Every bite will give you more insight into what makes Testaccio unique and how its evolution over the centuries has influenced Roman culture and food today.

What's Included

  • Enjoy 14 food tastings across 8 family-run establishments in Rome's Testaccio neighborhood. Enough food for breakfast and lunch.
  • Step off the beaten path as you explore the history and cuisine of a non-touristy Roman neighborhood with a local foodie guide.
  • Take part in a typical Italian breakfast of coffee and pastries, including a very special Roman delicacy!
  • Go grocery shopping Roman style as you taste your way through the Testaccio Market, sampling cheeses, cured meats, pizza, seasonal produce, and more as you chat with our friends behind the stalls.
  • Experience a Roman lunch with pasta and wine, and learn how Testaccio has influenced Roman cuisine as a whole.
  • Tour a stunning private wine cellar and discover its unexpected ties to the Ancient Romans.
  • Learn the difference between gelato and ice cream and enjoy a cone or cup of your favorite flavors!

Testaccio Food Tour Itinerary

Then, following a typical day’s schedule for Romans, we’re off to the local market to say buongiorno to a few of the friendly vendors. (Some have had their stalls for more than 40 years!) As you make your way through the market, you'll try one of Rome’s most ...

Excellent
Definitely the highlight of my time in Rome. Food is such a quintessential part of our essence as people/community/society. The stories and history behind how the dish came about brought much life and meaning to it. I certainly recommend this tour to all the foodies out there. Our guide Manuela, was the life and soul of the session. It felt like the neighborhood gal is sharing her food joints with you! Thoroughly enjoyable!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Tastes and Traditions of Rome: Testaccio Food and Market Tour. Our guide, Aurelio, was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to spend time with. We sampled a wide range of food including breakfast and lunch, along with a trip to the amazing Testaccio market, visiting various food stalls. With every stop, we fed our minds as well as our bodies. This is our first experience with Devour City Experiences and we are still talking about it!

This was a great food tour. Food was just right (but still a lot) and you will not leave the tour hungry. Our guide Gulia was nice and very knowledgeable and we experienced food that was not common but still “molto buono” which we enjoyed. Another good thing to note is that the area is not crowded and was a nice break from other busy areas of Rome
