The Raval neighborhood which was once known as the barrio chino or China Town was not always a place you’d want to find yourself after sunset. Long before Barcelona became the hopping, cosmopolitan city it is today, the Raval stood on the outskirts of the city walls, and over the years developed from farmland and vegetable gardens into one of the city’s seediest areas. Today, it still has a bit of that edge, but with, for the most part, the Raval is one of Ciutat Vella’s most authentic neighborhood, with some incredibly delicious spots to discover! Creative Catalan cuisine is not hard to find in Barcelona. One of the longest still-standing establishments on the bustling Joaquin Costa street, Casa Almirall is a modernist gem waiting to be discovered. Though it seems like an ordinary bar upon first glance, they actually cook up some of the best tapas in town during the day. There’s no menu, just a printed receipt on each table with what’s on offer for the day.
