To truly understand a city, you have to speak to its locals, so for the next installment in our My Seville series, we’re talking to someone behind one of our absolute favorite tapas restaurants in Seville, Enrique Becerra.

"
My Seville with Javier Becerra, seen inside his father’s restaurant, Restaurante Enrique Becerra

This family-run restaurant, one of our favorite spots in the Arenal neighborhood, has been treating Seville to innovative dishes for over thirty years. Their varied menu places particular focus on the Moorish influence on traditional Andalusian food. Also, with an extensive selection of wine, and the expert staff needed to help in the pairing process, Enrique Becerra is a great place to try a glass of sherry in Seville.

We sat down with the owner’s son, Javier Becerra, to learn a little bit more about this magnificent restaurant, his own connection to Seville and what exactly it is, for him, that makes this city so special.

Who are you and what do you do?

¿Quién eres y a qué te dedicas?

I’m Javi Becerra, my family has been involved in the restaurant business for six generations. It all started in Carmona, a town near to Seville, and my grandfather was the first to come to Seville to open a restaurant. Since then my Father, my Uncle and me, we’ve all followed the tradition.

Have you always been involved in the family business?

¿Siempre has formado parte del negocio familiar?

No, I actually studied computer engineering and was working as an IT technician for five years. One Christmas my father was busy in the restaurant so I came to give him a hand, then again during Holy Week, after that it was for two weeks at a time, a month and then before I realized it I was fully part of the restaurant – it was in my blood!

Tell us about your history with Seville.

I was born in Seville, my father was born in my grandmother’s house on Calle Sol, and I basically haven’t left here!

Complete this phrase: ‘You can’t leave Seville without…’

Getting to know its people. More than just the city itself, Seville is about the people. They’re people that are always very open, polite and friendly and they’re always willing to help you. To really know Seville, you have to get to know its people. Seville is so much more than the Giralda, the Golden Tower and the Bullring.

What is your favorite food in Seville?

¿Cuál es tu plato favorito de Sevilla?

It’s difficult to say. In Seville you can’t leave without trying the traditional dishes like bull’s tail in one of the places that serve it, or the famous pringá, especially when served on warm bread – it’s something special. And if it’s summer, you have to have some cold salmorejo. It really eases the heat when you need it!

What is your favorite restaurant in Seville?

¿Cuál es tu restaurante favorito de Sevilla?

There are many in Seville that I love, but to say one that perhaps is a little less known, I would say Casa del Cordero on Calle Paraíso – it’s amazing! It’s also a small family-run restaurant and you can get some great food there. Everything is homemade and, even though there are lots of great places where you can eat well in Seville, whenever I can I head there.

What would be your ideal night out in Seville?

¿Cómo sería tu noche ideal en Sevilla?

Normally the first thing you do is meet with your friends and have the first beer out in the fresh air. In Seville you tend to tapear more than sit down and eat. So, you try something in a few places, the pringá in Bodeguita Romero for example, you try the anchovies in Trifón and a few of the montaditos in Casa Moreno. And then, having had three small dishes, you’re pretty much finished and you head down to a terrace beside the river to finish the night.

What do you like most about living in Seville?

Well, I like that it’s not too big. It’s not so small that it’s uncomfortable but it’s not as big as places like Madrid or Barcelona where every time you try to head out for a walk it ends up being impossible. There are always lots of people, they’re always rushing, they always seem annoyed – it’s another pace of life. In Seville you can head out, you don’t have the stress of being in a car for hours every time you want to head out, it’s another rhythm that’s totally different.

What’s your favorite secret place in Seville?

¿Cuál es tu lugar secreto de Sevilla?

Well, I would say you should lose yourself in the Santa Cruz neighborhood. Santa Cruz has little squares, streets and alleyways that are so different to the typical touristy areas and it’s amazing to just lose yourself there because it’s from a completely different era. Also, take a stroll through the gardens of The Alcázar. Apart from the Alcázar itself as a monument, walking through the gardens is something spectacular.
