There’s nothing like seeing a place through the eyes of a local, so we’ve started a new series, My Seville, where locals from all walks of life share their favorite foods, places and stories about their city!

We figured the best way to start this off was by speaking to a local jamón (ham) expert who hails from the nearby province of Huelva, famous for its incredible jamón ibérico. Gema made the move to Seville a year ago to sell excellent jamón ibérico products in her stall in one of our favorite markets in the city, El Mercado de Encarnación.

Gema has quickly established herself as a thriving business in the market where her clients range from local jamón addicts to curious international visitors seeking out an authentic jamón experience.

Who are you/what do you do/how long have you lived in Seville?

My name is Gema, I’m from Huelva and I work with Iberian ham. I’ve lived in Seville for about a year.

Tell us about your history with Seville.

Cuéntanos sobre tu historia con Sevilla.

My connection with the city has always been ham and work. As my family have been involved in raising pigs and producing ham since I was very young, I was always involved in that too. Family tradition like that doesn’t give you much option to do other things! And so very recently I’ve gotten to know Seville and opened a shop here!

What was your first impression of Seville?

¿Cuál fue tu primera impresión de Sevilla?

Amazing! Wonderful people, great weather! The thing that caught my attention the most though is that the people here trust in you very quickly and they respond to you very quickly too and that’s something that doesn’t happen everywhere! The people here give you a great reception and that’s so nice!

¡Maravillosa!

One thing you wouldn’t leave Seville without doing?

I would try to do something that would not allow me to lose contact with Seville, to do something that forces me to keep on returning to Seville.

Apart from ham, what is you favorite food in Seville?

Bull’s tail!

Cola de toro!

Favorite restaurant in Seville?

¿Cuál es tu restaurante preferido en Sevilla?

There are a number of them, but one in particular that is very simple with all homemade dishes, including very good bull’s tail and other typical foods from Seville, is called Zurbaran. I always recommend it. You can go for tapas and they have a great chef who does amazing traditional food that he prepares all himself. There are also home made meat stews which I really like, everything is very well made, it’s really special!

What would be your ideal night out in Seville?

¿Cómo sería una noche ideal en Sevilla?

A night with some friends – a lot of them come from outside Seville, sharing it with the people from Seville and enjoying everything that Seville has to offer – which is a lot!

What about your favorite day trip from Seville?

¿Cuál es tu excursión preferida desde Sevilla?

Huelva!

What do you like most about living in Seville?

¿Por qué te gusta vivir en Sevilla?

The wonderful people! Apart from this, it’s a beautiful city with amazing monuments but I always say that it’s the people that make the places!
