In Rome, drinks are an important and integral part of our food culture. Just as we don\u2019t have a meal without drinking, we rarely drink without eating.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For everything, there is a season\u2014or at least a time, and that goes for drinks in Rome, too. Different drinks punctuate the Roman day from breakfast through the mid-morning break to dinner.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Entering a cafe or restaurant you\u2019ll see a bewildering range of bottles, some familiar, some not so. Deciding what to drink in Rome can be a toss up between playing it safe or making a date with adventure.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

One pro tip is to have a look around and see what other people are drinking. Point to an interesting-looking beverage and say, \u201cVoglio quello, per favore<\/em>,\u201d (\u201cI\u2019d like that, please\u201d). Doing as the Romans do is a foolproof way to follow the rules of what to drink when, without even knowing what they are!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\"If<\/figure>\r\n\r\n

Breakfast<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Coffee<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The main breakfast and mid-morning drink in Italy is coffee<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ask for coffee without stipulating and you\u2019ll get an espresso. This is considered the basic kind of coffee in Italy. Other kinds include the cappuccino, the caff\u00e8 macchiato<\/em> (an espresso with a touch of milk foam on top), and the latte macchiato<\/em> (milk with an espresso shot on top).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

When it comes to coffee with milk, there is a simple rule to obey if you want to blend in with the locals: no milky drinks after 11 a.m. You will sometimes see Romans running into the bar at just before 11, checking their watches and then ordering and bolting a cappuccino<\/em> just in the nick of time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tea<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tea is also very popular in Rome, but is almost always drunk with lemon rather than milk. Many bars will have a selection of teas from the normal to the exotic on display. Romans often enjoy tea with pastries as an afternoon snack at about 5 p.m.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

During the day<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rome can be very hot in the summer. If you find yourself here then, you\u2019re going to need something to sip on midday to cool you down\u2014and lucky for you, we know just the thing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In addition to water, we have a large range of unusual-looking soft drinks in Rome which are very refreshing. Among these are chinotto<\/em>, a slightly bitter drink made from a citrus fruit of the same name, and pompelmo<\/em>, a fizzy grapefruit drink. Fizzy orange, aranciata<\/em>, is very popular as is Lemonsoda<\/em>, a brand of lemonade.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Aperitivo<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Traditionally, an aperitivo<\/em> was a drink before dinner, but aperitivo in Rome<\/a> has now turned into a mini meal, with lots of bars in Rome<\/a> offering buffets to go with early-evening drinks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Spritzes<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

One of the most popular aperitivo<\/em> drinks is the Aperol spritz<\/a>, a bitter, orange-colored, rhubarb-based liqueur, mixed with prosecco and a shot of club soda. This isn\u2019t the only spritz in town though! You can shake it up by asking for a spritz made with Campari (a bitter, red-colored, citrus-based liqueur), Cynar (a bitter, dark-colored, artichoke-based liqueur) or our favorite, a Hugo spritz. This last one is prosecco mixed with deliciously refreshing elderflower cordial.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Cocktails<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Aperitivo<\/em> time is also cocktail hour. Popular Roman cocktails include the Negroni<\/em>: gin, Campari and red vermouth; the Negroni Sbagliato<\/em>: prosecco, Campari, and red vermouth; and the Campari Soda. Many bars will have a list of original proprietary cocktails for you to try as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Non-alcoholic options<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There are also two non-alcoholic aperitivo<\/em> drinks worth mentioning. These are Crodino<\/em> (a slightly bitter drink, a bit like Campari soda) and Gingerino<\/em>, a ginger-based drink. Both of these are designed to suit adult tastes, specifically for this time of day.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Lunch and dinner<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Water<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The first question you will be asked when you sit down in a Roman restaurant is if you\u2019d like still or sparkling water. Almost all Italians drink bottled water with their meal in restaurants and so the waiter will assume you will too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Sparkling water in Rome is what\u2019s known as lievemente frizzante<\/em> (slightly sparkling) rather than the full-on carbonated water you find elsewhere.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Wine<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Wine is the drink of choice to pair with dinner. Cocktails are not normally drunk with food, although a few trendy restaurants have started pairing cocktails with dishes on their menus. That said, it\u2019s much more common to drink wine\u2014and only wine\u2014with food.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Most restaurants will have decent house wines, both red and white, which come in carafes of various sizes. The smallest, un<\/em> quartino<\/em>, is \u00bc liter, then un mezzo litro<\/em>, \u00bd liter and un litro<\/em>, a liter. They will also have a wine list<\/a>, if you want to choose something of a higher quality.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In Italy, it\u2019s always a good idea to go for wines local to the region where you are, as these will suit the regional dishes better. Most wines from the area around Rome are white. The three most important DOCG wines are Cesanese del Piglio<\/em>, Cannelino di Frascati<\/em>, and Frascati<\/em>, which can be slightly sweet or dry. (DOCG stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita<\/em>\u2014controlled and guaranteed origin\u2014and is the highest level in the Italian wine quality control system.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Other local names to look for are Bianco Capena<\/em>, Castelli Romani<\/em>, Colli Albani<\/em>, Colli Lanuvini<\/em> and Zagarolo<\/em>. For a red wine Colli della Sabina<\/em> is a good choice. And of course, you can always ask the waiter to recommend something local to suit your taste.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Beer<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It\u2019s worth noting that beer is rarely drunk with food\u2014unless that food is pizza, in which case full speed ahead! It\u2019s served either in bottles, or alla spina<\/em> (on draft). Alla spina<\/em> comes in two varieties: chiara<\/em>, like lager, or rossa<\/em>, a deeper-colored and stronger-tasting beer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Post-dinner<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

After dinner it\u2019s customary to have a digestivo<\/em>, a nightcap to help you digest your meal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

These are mostly either amari<\/em>, bittersweet drinks such as Vecchio Amaro del Capo<\/em>, Averna<\/em>, Fernet-Branca<\/em> and Montenegro<\/em>; or grappa, a firewater made from fermented grape skins. Grappa comes in two varieties, white or barricata<\/em>, a yellow barrel-aged version which tastes a bit like whiskey.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You could also go for limoncello<\/em>, a liqueur made from steeping lemon peel in alcohol and mixing it with a sugar syrup, or liquirizia<\/em>, a licorice version. These can be accompanied by an espresso but never a cappuccino <\/em>(remember, it\u2019s past 11 a.m.!).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
