What an amazing way to learn about Roman food! Guilia was fantastic and the variety and volume of the foods we tried was great! I’m so full! I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Rome. So good to get out of the tourist packed areas and see an authentic part of Rome.

There are food tours that everyone flocks to—and then there’s this one, created for true food lovers. Testaccio offers an authentic experience rooted deeply in Rome’s culinary traditions.
Just like we all have our favorite local spots back home; our go-to pizza place, burger joint, steakhouse, or sweet treat, you’ll find that same sense of familiarity here, except every stop feels even better than the last. The neighborhood isn’t overly touristy, which makes this tour feel like a hidden gem and an absolute must-do.
We sampled one of the best maritozzi, explored the revitalized Testaccio Market, and caught a glimpse of its historic centerpiece, the old slaughterhouse (Mattatoio). Lunch was incredible, too much to fully capture and we wrapped things up with gelato from a shop run by a 90-year-old owner who’s been perfecting his craft for over four decades. These were just a few of the standout moments.
What made the experience truly special was Annmarie. Her deep knowledge, warm personality, and engaging storytelling brought everything to life. She was welcoming, thoughtful, and made us feel like old friends by the end of the tour. This was easily one of the highlights of our trip to Rome and the perfect way to end our visit.

Know Before You Book

What makes the Testaccio food tour different from other Rome food tours?

How many people are on this Testaccio food tour?
Small groups only—max 12 guests. It keeps the atmosphere intimate and ensures you get personal time with your guide.
Is this a good food tour in Rome for kids?
Definitely! Curious eaters of all ages are welcome. From the bustling local market to the historic stone wine cellar, and tastings in between, this tour is perfectly paced to keep kids entertained and full.
Where exactly is Testaccio, and how do I get there from central Rome?
Testaccio is a historic, residential neighborhood just south of the Aventine Hill—easily reached by metro, bus, or a 10-minute taxi ride from the Colosseum area. It's off the beaten path but totally accessible.
Will I actually meet locals on this Rome food tour?
Absolutely. From multigenerational market vendors to the family behind our favorite trattoria, you’ll meet the people shaping Testaccio’s food scene today. Not to mention your guide, who is a Rome local and foodie expert.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes are a must—we’ll be walking and standing throughout the experience. We recommend bringing a refillable water bottle, a camera, and an appetite.
